The Journey

Cairo London Dubai Abu Dhabi
Cairo 2010 – 2018

Software Engineer

Ministry of Communications and IT, Egypt Mar 2010 – Nov 2016

Led a team of 4 engineers building an automated project management system used across multiple ministries. Also built alazharmemory.eg — a digital archive for the Al-Azhar library collection, launched at the Cairo ICT international fair.

Senior Software Engineer

Vodafone Nov 2016 – Dec 2018

Led a team of 3 engineers building Vodafone's Remote SIM Provisioning platform — eSIM management for 20,000+ users worldwide. Early eSIM days: half the challenge was figuring out the spec while building the product.

London 2019 – 2021

Senior Software Engineer

BBC Jan 2019 – May 2021

Built data pipelines connecting disparate media content systems into graph representations — giving journalists tools to find connections across stories they wouldn't have seen otherwise. Designed cloud analytics solutions for content performance at BBC scale.

Senior Software Engineer

Talabat — Delivery Hero May 2021 – May 2023

Inherited a critical Order Transmission Engine, refactored it to Grade A code quality, and brought data quality incidents down to zero. Not "near zero." Zero. Built a cloud-native data integration pipeline with auto-generated stream services, bringing data consistency to 100% between core streams.

About Me

I studied biomedical engineering at Helwan University in Cairo. People sometimes call that a "non-traditional path" into software, but honestly, it's the best thing that happened to my career. When you've modeled biological systems, you develop an instinct for complexity, feedback loops, and things that fail gracefully — which is basically what good software is.

My journey started at the Egyptian MCIT, then wound through Vodafone, BBC, Talabat, and Careem before landing at Shory, where I now build AI-powered products for insurance in Abu Dhabi. Along the way, the stack evolved — JavaScript, TypeScript, Python — but the obsession stayed the same: making systems that are reliable, observable, and actually useful to real people.

I'm the kind of engineer who'll compare programming paradigms to Mozart vs. Beethoven in a team chat, share five AI papers before lunch, and then spend the afternoon making sure the monitoring dashboards are right. I believe a 99.9% success rate tells you more than 100% ever could.

LLMs Multi-Agent Systems LangGraph GitOps AWS & Azure Terraform Observability
  • Lead AI engineer across the AI org — part architect, part builder, part the person who makes sure things actually deploy and stay up. I bring both the AI and the DevOps lens, which turns out to be a rare and useful combination in a fast-moving insurtech.
  • AIDA: The core AI insurance assistant — multi-agent system with a booking agent that infers specialties from symptoms, finds in-network providers, and books appointments via browser automation. Also owns the ETL pipeline that keeps the data fresh from legacy MSSQL sources.
  • Nexes-ADE: Automated document extraction — OCR meets LLMs to process insurance documents at scale. Async HTTP clients, connection pool tuning, audit logging on every /extract call. The unglamorous reliability work that makes throughput real.
  • Quote Compare: LangGraph-powered insurance quote comparison engine that helps users make sense of competing policies. The kind of product where AI needs to be accurate, not just fast.
  • Platform Engineering: Designed the GitOps foundation from scratch — app-of-apps ArgoCD pattern, shared Helm base charts, multi-env/multi-cloud directory layout (AWS EKS + Azure AKS). Terraform IaC modules for everything: clusters, Key Vaults, workload identity, managed databases. Built the full LGTM observability stack — Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, Tempo, OpenTelemetry — instrumented across all services. Engineers commit a YAML file and push; ArgoCD reconciles within 3 minutes. No kubectl apply, no scripts.

Algorithms Real-time Systems Location Tracking Data Science
  • Worked on the rider-driver matching engine — the kind of system where a few milliseconds of optimization directly translate to someone getting home faster. Real-time location, dynamic supply-demand balancing, and the beautiful chaos of Gulf traffic.
  • Partnered with data scientists to analyze ride patterns and improve dispatch efficiency. The kind of problem where the math is elegant but the edge cases are very, very human.

Data Pipelines ETL Microservices IaC
  • Order Transmission Engine: Inherited a critical order pipeline, refactored it to Grade A code quality, and — the part I'm proudest of — brought data quality incidents down to zero. Not "near zero." Zero.
  • Data Integration Pipeline: Built a cloud-native data pipeline that centralized collection across services. Created auto-generated stream services that brought data consistency to 100% between core streams. When your food delivery depends on data flowing correctly, you care about every byte.

Graph Data Analytics Cloud Data Pipelines
  • Built data pipelines that connected disparate media content systems into graph representations — giving BBC journalists tools to find connections across stories they wouldn't have seen otherwise. The kind of work where you're quietly helping good journalism happen.
  • Designed cloud analytics solutions for content performance. Learning how millions of people consume media changes how you think about scale.

  • Led a team of 3 engineers building Vodafone's Remote SIM Provisioning platform — eSIM management for consumer devices, used by 20,000+ people worldwide. This was early eSIM days, so half the challenge was figuring out the spec while building the product.

  • Where it all started. Led a team of 4 building an automated project management system used across multiple ministries. Government software taught me patience, stakeholder management, and that "simple" is never simple.
  • Helped build alazharmemory.eg — a digital archive for the Al-Azhar library collection, launched at the Cairo ICT international fair. Preserving centuries of knowledge with code felt meaningful in a way I still think about.

Say Hello

Whether it's an interesting AI problem, a collaboration idea, or just a good conversation about why Beethoven's approach to composition mirrors functional programming — I'd love to hear from you. I'm also happy to share AI papers and articles; fair warning, I send a lot of links.
